We arrived in Romania in the afternoon of April 27th and were driven straight to Mihaelas house. Mihaela is not just a trusted rescuer and fosterer but also a cherished friend who we have shared many experiences with over the last three years or more. Mihaela works long hours as a teacher, has a family to care for and holds as many dogs as she can at her home. She works only with us and Phoenix dog rescue now as she has had experiences in the past where international adoptions have not turned out well.
We feel very at home at Mihaelas and are made so welcome. We meet all of Mihaelas dogs, including Thor and Timmy who we met as three week old puppies back in 2013. These boys were a litter of thirteen, their nervous, traumatised mother had left them with a naural distrust of humans. One by one between us and Phoenix we have rehomed the others but these two have remained behind. Timmy has not been lucky with his health in the past but is ready for adoption now. At this point we thought Thor to be ok too but since then Mihaela tells me that Thor has blisters in is mouth which signify a virus that must be cured now before he can come. These two have no luck and I wonder if we will ever complete the mission to rehome this family entirely. Their mother is spayed now but can get out of Mihaelas garden and now lives contentedly on some wasteground nearby.... this is not ideal but is the best that can be obtained for her.
Its 31 degrees and after a snack and some drinks we inevitably end up lying in the dog pen soaking up the sun and some puppy kennels. We are very aware that this is a social afternoon and the real work starts tomorrow. We feel relaxed and happy with dogs that we know are safe and have futures. They are either Mihaelas own dogs or will come to us or Phoenix at some point.... there is no need to fear for their safety.
Later we have wine and amazing food cooked for us by Mihaelas husband, who is a chef. We leave late, relaxed and happy, its dark and we don't see too many street dogs on the journey to Claudias house where we are staying. Nothing much is wrong with the world at this point. This is an easy report to write, our heads are still clear.
